Memory Almost Full

by Tony Dayoub

That's the title of Paul McCartney's new album. It may also describe the way you felt if you spent your usual couple of hours at Starbucks today.

Yes, the marketing geniuses at Starbucks think that since you spend a few hours each afternoon at their store you are the perfect target for the first release from their new Hear Music record label. How did they go about promoting it? By giving free copies each time you bought a latte?

Nooo... they did it by having all their stores play it all day nonstop!

I hear it's quite good.

Too bad I don't drink coffee. I'll probably have to wait a while to judge for myself.

French Cannes-Cannes

by Tony Dayoub

Just checked out Richard Schickel's wonderful new documentary Bienvenue a Cannes on TCM. It is highly recommended. This film is a wonderful primer to the behind-the-scenes work, tensions, and camaraderie that occur every year at the Cannes Film Festival.

But best of all, it is a wonderful launching point for the neophyte interested in foreign film. It has anecdotes about such films as The Cranes Are Flying, Roma, Citta Aperta, and Farewell My Concubine.

And guess what... be proud that you are an American because you have been well represented in Cannes by such films as Pulp Fiction, M*A*S*H, and The Brown Bunny (just kidding about that last one... sorry Chloe).

With a wonderful breadth of interview subjects, from noted film critic Richard Corliss, to director Wim Wenders, to Clint Eastwood, and even down to the concierge of the Hotel Majestic... this documentary proves to be a fascinating look into the machinations at the most famous film festival in the world.

The Sopranos: The End of the Affair?

by Tony Dayoub

So this is what it's been building up to? Two of Tony's most loyal knights eliminated from the chess board in what is almost an afterthought of a plot. Tony and Melfi have a falling out. And AJ? Snap out of it!

Dangling plotlines still unresolved... I thought the Russians Were Coming... the Russians were Coming... from Steve Buscemi's fantastic "Pine Barrens" to Furio's self-imposed exile after his almost affair with Carm. Never has a show so great managed to derail itself on so many occasions after building momentum each season to its climax.

But, oh, what a glorious train wreck.

Is it too much too hope that David Chase redeem himself next week in that short one hour finale?
